Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Eleanor Roosevelt

This quote and others like it have crossed my path three times already this morning, which means it is the universe trying to tell me to write about it.

I think the best way to explore this quote is to reflect on each of the three sections.

  1. Great Minds discuss ideas

For me this means that that we are at our best when we discuss ideas, things bigger than ourselves, things that challenge us and make us think beyond the simple things we face daily. The greater and bigger the idea the greater and bigger it makes us. So find people who challenge you to think big, about grand ideas and make each other better.

2. Average Minds discuss events

This is fairly normal for most people, to discuss the things are happening right now in your life and around you. This is not a bad thing unless you get so distracted by events that you let them control you and your emotions. I find myself listening to sports talk radio sometimes, and I realize this is falling into this category. I like to know how teams did, but hour after hour of talk about events can drag me down and lower my energy.

3. Small Minds discuss people

I can honestly say I actively try to avoid this when I can. I see this as a massive problem here in the United Staes, where we care so much about what other people are doing, saying, etc. that we stop focusing on our lives or great ideas. I see the issue of Colin Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem to be the result of this.

I understand that behind his actions there could be events and even ideas worth discussing. But the conversations happening are not about the grand ideas of police brutality or honoring ones nation, and instead it is all about Colin and who he is, his faults, etc. This makes for great media, but not for great growth.

So I encourage all of you to discuss ideas, and find people who help you discuss ideas. You will grow more, making you a better business person, and eventually lead to a greater business.
